An article firstly presented as a title of “Portuguese Bandel in Thonburi: Reward of Taharn Farang Man Pun, 1768” for the International Conference of Dhonburi Rajabhat University, Thailand. Thonburi the Former Capital of Thailand , 25-27 May 2004, The Royal River Hotel, Bangplad, Bangkok .

The modern mural painting at the National Monument depicts the scenario during Phyatak and his followers left the Capital City of Ayuttaya to the city of Chantaburi in 1767.
Abstract
Krom Taharn Farang Man Püen or the Regiment of the Portuguese Sharp-Shooters; perhaps, was established in 1548, during the war of Siamese-Chiangmai, based on Fernão Mendes Pinto’s evidence. After the victory, the Siamese King granted them the land where these people and their descendants were able to live their lives in Siam.

Three months before the fall of Ayutthaya in April 1767, Praya Tak decided to lead soldiers from the battle field of Wat Pichai Temple, mounting to Chantaburi. He spent about 6 months to restore the kingdom. After his enthronement as the King of Siam, he established the Kingdom of Thonburi in the same year.

Siamese Royal Chronicles indicated that Praya Tak’s army was composed of
500 Siamese and Chinese soldiers. In addition, contemporary records, mentioned only the roles of the Portuguese and Chinese in defending the French camp. There was not any document revealing the role of the Portuguese descendants in the army of Praya Tak.

Fortunately, a Portuguese research published in 1983, specified that there were 79 Portuguese descendants had been engaged in Praya Tak’s army during 1767-1768. Furthermore, at least Kun Rep Samdeng (aka Kun Ridhi Samdang), one of four captains of the regiment of Krom Taharn Farang Man Püen, participated in many events.

According to the Siamese tradition, they had been granted the land to establish a new settlement and church. It was named as the Bandel(Village) de N. Senhor do Rosário and located near the King’s palace.
1. Relations between Siam and Portugal

Relationships between Ayutthaya, the former Capital of the Kingdom of Siam and Portugal was initiated before Alfonso de Albuquerque, the Portuguese Viceroy of India, defeated Malacca in August 11, 1511.[4] According to research of Shepard[5], de Campos[6] and Rong Syamanonda[7]: Duarte Fernandes was the first Portuguese Ambassador to travel to the Siamese Court in the reign of King Ramathibordi (1491-1529.) with tributes and the royal message to cultivate friendship and to offer privilege to Siam when the Portuguese fleet could dominate Malacca.[8]
The first bilateral relation seemed progressively when the King of Siam responded to the Portuguese amicably by sending the diplomatic corps with the royal message and tributes back to Malacca.

In 1512, as it was narrated in records of Braz de Albuquerque and João de Barros, António de Miranda de Azevedo, Manuel Fraguzo and Duarte Coelho, were sent as the second Portuguese diplomatic corps to Siam on a Chinese junk and disembarked at Tarangue, then traveled by land to Ayutthaya.[9]

In 1514, Manuel Fraguzo, with information of the Siamese culture and economy, led the Siamese diplomatic corps with the royal message and tribute to Goa, the Viceroy’s Headquarters of Portugal in India.

An official letter of Ruy de Brito, the first Portuguese Captain of Malacca, reported directly to Afonso Albuquerque on January 6, 1514, indicated that the Siamese court also desired to trade in Malacca, and welcome for the Portuguese assistance in case of the assault by it’s enemy.[10]
The most important incident that brought about the origin of the Portuguese community in Ayutthaya was the arrival of Duarte Coelho, as the third Portuguese ambassador in 1516.[11] Although, his arrival year varied depending on different sources.[12] However, in this year, Siam and Portugal successfully achieved their bilateral agreement.

Portuguese agreed to provide firearms and ammunition to Siam and to let the Siamese trade and settle in Malacca peacefully. In return, the Siamese court would do favors for the commercial advantages and privileges of the Portuguese trader. Furthermore, the Siamese court must allow the Portuguese to trade, live and practice their own religion without obstruction.[13]

There were many conditions motivated the Portuguese in Malacca to in touch with Siam. But the most remarkable stipulation was to activate commerce in Malacca, after the fleeing of Muslim traders to Pattani.[14]

From 1516, the Portuguese and their descendants had been living in “the Campo(Camp) de Portuguese”[15]. Members of the community followed varied occupations, such royal guards, official interpreters, traders, pilots, doctors, musicians, painters, goldsmiths, jewelers and engineers.[16]

Sometimes they were respected by the folk people because of their bravery and skill in battle in service to the court. Sometime, they were treated with disgust and annoyed by the Siamese because of their attempt to defend their advantage and prestige.

2. Portuguese Royal Guard in the Siamese Court: A Starting Point and development of the Krom Taharn Farang Man Püen(the Regiment of the Portuguese Sharp-Shooters).

The record of Pinto mentions that during the war between Siam and the Kingdom of Chiangmai in 1548, Portuguese traders under command of Domingo de Seixas, were forced to join the Siamese Army as the royal guard of King Pra Chairaja: “As for us Portuguese, in regard that more respect had always been carried in that country to them, then to all other nations, this King sent to desire them that they would accompany him in this voyage, wherein they should do him a pleasure, because he would trust them only with the guard of his person, as judging them more proper for it then any other that he could make choice of; and to oblige them the more thereunto, the message was accompanied with many fair promises, and very great hopes of pensions, graces, benefits, favors, and honors, but above all, with a permission which should be granted them to build churches in his Kingdom, which so obliged us, that of an hundred and thirty Portuguese which we were, there were six-score[17] of us that agreed together to go to this war.”[18]

Hutchinson indicated that the Portuguese Bodyguard of the King initially instructed the Siamese soldiers in the use of firearms.[19] H.R.H. Prince Damrong[20] and Lieutenant General Damneon Lekagul added that the Portuguese soldiers also taught the Siamese war strategy and to cast cannons.[21] And especially, H.R.H. Prince Damrong had his suggestion that the “six-score” of the Portuguese Personal Bodyguard of the Siamese King were the starting point of Krom Taharn Farang Man Püen, or the Regiment of the Portuguese Sharp-Shooters.

3. Campo de Portuguese : the Portuguese Camp in Ayutthaya

After the King had obtained “so happy a victory” over “Chimmay aka Chiangmai”, he granted rewards to the Portuguese, as narrated by Pinto’s: “It is my intent that the six-score Portuguese, which have always so faithfully watched upon the guard of my person, shall receive for a recompense of their good services, half a year tributes which the Queen of Guiben[22] gives me; and that in my custom house, their merchandise shall pay no custom for the space of three years: Moreover my intent is, that their priests may throughout all the towns of my Kingdom publish the law whereof they make profession, namely of God made man for the salvation of mankind, as they have many times pleased me.”[23]

Some historian disagreed with Pinto’s record. W.A.R. Wood debates that the battle year related in his record is not in accord with Chiangmai and Nan’s documents. His argument seems to devaluate Pinto’s record. However, the story of Domingo de Seixas and his companions was not only stated in Pinto’s, but also mentioned in the report of João de Barros[24] and Simon de Laloubère.[25]

The record of Pinto not only referred to many people whom he met, in his document, after his ship was attacked by the pirates, he also confessed to the public that he could survived by having had the meat of the Malay’s body.[26]

Above all, location of the Portuguese Community on one of the beautiful area with three churches, could be confirmed the truth of his peregrination.

4. Structure of Krom Taharn Farang Man Püen

H.R.H. Prince Damrong indicated that the Krom Taharn Farang Man Püen, had been developed from the service of 120 Portuguese Royal Guards of King Pra Chairaja in 1548.[27]
Pra Aiyakarn Tamnaeng na Taharn Huamuang (Act of Soldier’s Status in term of Land for the Provinces), in the Kotmai Tra Samduang (Three Seals Code) specified a structure of the Krom Taharn Farang Man Püen as demonstrated in below:

Structure of the Krom Taharn Farang Man Püen
(The Regiment of the Portuguese Sharp-Shooters)

-150 Privates (เลว ๑๕๐ คน)
Total 170 men

From the upper, the regiment was classified into 4 sub-regiments. There were 170 soldiers in total. Four Heads of the regiment gained 400 in term of land’s status, while their deputy, gained only 200 and lieutenants gained 50 each. Why was it such a limited number when compared to other royal bodyguards? It might assume that at the first time there were only 120 Portuguese served in the Royal Bodyguards in the Reign of King Pra Chairaja. Perhaps it was the policy of the royal court to aware of the more personal bodyguards the more dangerous.

In the overview, members of the Portuguese Community in Siam, as soldiers, were involved in many political incidents and wars during the Ayutthaya Period, as recorded in foreign documents. However, after the reign of King Pettaraja (1688-1700), role of the Krom Taharn Farang Man Püen was not be recognized until the fall of Ayutthaya.

5. The Independent War of Praya Tak

According to the Royal Chronicle (Praraja Pongsawadarn Chabarb Praraja hataleka), in November 1766, Praya Tak, aka, Praya Kampaengpet, a new Siamese Naval Commander, was assigned to defend the city at Wat Pakaew (วัดป่าแก้ว), Southeast of the city, with his colleagues, Praya Petchaburi and Luang Sornsenee. Unfortunately, the operation did not succeed. Praya Petchaburi died bravely on duty.

Praya Tak and Luang Sornsenee had to retreat to the district area of Wat Kluey(วัดกล้วย) and Wat Pichai(วัดพิชัย), next to the Eastern part of the city’s moat. And in January 1767, during the riot, more than 10,000 houses burnt surrounding the area of the royal palace. It caused Praya Tak and his captains, except Luang Sornsenee, to leave the city for Chantabunt (Chantaburi), on the East coast of the Siam Bay.[28]

Siamese documents indicate that the army of Praya Tak was composed of Siamese and Chinese soldiers. On the other hand, some foreign contemporary archives also mention the role of the Portuguese in defending the Church of Saint Joseph in the French Camp. Although, there were only 80 Portuguese able men who knew the military arts.[29]

6. Prominent evidence of the Portuguese Sharp-shooters in the Army of Praya Tak

The Portuguese community evacuated to the Kingdom of Thonburi after the fall of Ayutthaya. But people did not really understand how could they settled on such a proper area.
Although, a handbook of the community compiled by the Abbot of the Church of Santa Cruz in 1999, with the collaboration of the Embassy of Portugal in Bangkok, described that in 1767, some Portuguese joined in the army of Praya Tak. But unbelievable, after he gained the throne, he sent for the French priest, Père Corre, who moved from Cambodia with 4 Christians and granted him some money and a boat, and promised to grant him a church. And six months later; in September 14, 1769, the church was constructed completely, and named as “the Church of Santa Cruz”.[30]

Anyhow, P. Manuel de Teixeira, referred to an article of Dr. Joaquim de Campos from 1938 as it revealed rather clearly that there were an amount of 79 Portuguese “soldiers” joined in the army of Praya Tak during his independent war, when he gained the throne in 1768, he set his royal decree to proclaim that with the great help of members of the Portuguese bandel, such a António Henrique, Ambrozio Carvalho, Luão Sizot, Manuel Gumes, Kun rep Samdeng, Dom João Kunt Sãotha Ackne, Francisco Soares[31] , etc., he could drive the Burmese away from Bangkok successfully.

So to reward for their assistance, he kindly granted them a Church and land for their new settlement near the former “Francezese (ฝรั่งเศส/ French) Fort”[32]. And it was named as the Bandel de Nossa Senhora do Rosário(หมู่บ้านของพระแม่แห่งการสวดภาวนาของเรา/ the Village of Our Lady of Rosary) at that time. The King also allowed them to search for their relations and other Portuguese family that losing during the war, to come and settle together.

The document did not mention to the French priest. And in my opinion, it was possible that the 79 Portuguese soldiers could be the same group of the 80 Portuguese able men who were assigned to defend the Church of Saint Joseph in the French Camp before the falling the old capital city of Ayutthaya.

In his research, Teixeira failed to remark that Kun rep Samdeng, aka, Kun Ridhi- Samdaeng, was a nobleman who worked as a left chief of the Regiment of Krom Taharn Farang Man Püen.
Therefore, at least one of four chiefs of the regiment had joined in Praya Tak’s Army. And especially, the land belong to the Portuguese settlement was also being the reward of one chief of the Regiment of the Portuguese Sharp-Shooters, in 1768, not the reward of the French priest in 1769.

7. Conclusion: Bandel de Nossa Senhora do Rosário: Reward of the Virtue the Portuguese Soldier.

Bandel de N. Senhora do Rosário situated on the left side of Chao Praya River, Southern of Wat Kallayarn at the entrance of Klong Bangkok-Yai Canal, not far from Wat Arun and the Former Palace of King Taksin( King of Thonburi) orderly. The Portuguese descendants of the Krom Taharn Farang Man Püen did their services to the Siamese court faithfully until the starting of the Defense Ministry in the reign of King Rama V. Some family descended from the Portuguese Sharp-shooters, such a the Kalmapijits, also live in the community with honor in a community at the present day.

From the Ayutthayan period, the Portuguese culture has blended into the Thai culture in many ways rather harmoniously. Some Portuguese food had been admitted implicitly into the Thai culture as the desert for example, “fios de ovos” (ฝอยทอง= Foy Tong), “Trouxas de caldas” (ทองหยิบ= Tong Yib ), “coscorões” (กรอบเค็ม/ ครองแครง=Krobkem/ Krong Kraeng), “massapães” (ลูกชุบ=Luk Choob), “queijadas de Coimbra” (บ้าบิ่น= Ba Bin), etc.[33] According to the foreign records, the Second King of Siam during Ayutthaya Period often requested experts from the Portuguese Camp to make confections for his court during festivities.[34]

Once before the reign of King Rama IV, the Siamese officials had been practiced the Portuguese language as the “língua franca” to trade with Europeans. Some Portuguese words became Thai, such as “Chapinha”[35] (จับปิ้ง= fig-leaf worn by little girl), “chá” (ชา= tea) and “café” (กาแฟ=coffee).

Nowadays, the Bandel central area is called Wat Santa Cruz or Kudichine. People living in the community are partially Portuguese and Chinese descendants. About thirty years ago, members of the community used to be invited to join the Christmas Eve celebration yearly at the Embassy of Portugal in Bangkok.
